When I was promoted to the role of HR Director in my last company, we embarked on a program of change both to enable the success of the company with better aligned services and solutions, as well as to change the focus in the HR team so that we managed and operated the function as a business. One of the components without which the whole HR model would have failed was the enhanced capability and services of the 1st Line HR Helpdesk in India. It was called Connect HR. Gem was the team leader for the helpdesk. Unfailingly polite without being obsequious, he was a thorough and dedicated professional, as well as a capable leader. In a helpdesk environment where it is not unusual to have higher than 100% turnover of staff in a year, I can only recall one person leaving the team in 2 years.
As you can imagine when large amounts of change are being made, both in the Company as well as in the HR model and processes, the helpdesk assumes a key critical role that allows the transactional to be managed remotely, so freeing up the time of the local HR team members to focus on making those changes a success. The Connect HR team under Gem became such an intrinsic part of the model that they began to be used not just for the standard transactional requirements but also for project support work. Nothing was too much trouble for Gem or the team. He, and they, exemplified the phrase "customer service".
I am proud to have worked with Gem and my regret is that I did not know him better. Those who did, speak of a man with a great sense of humour, a man who would always say that it was "under control", even though it may not have been at that time but inevitably would be and a man who believed in the quality of service. Gem was 33 years old and was taken too soon. Many others have lost their lives this week and they too have been taken before their time. I feel their loss but yet I did not know them. I did know Gem. He will be sorely missed, not only by his family and friends, but also all those who worked with him.
All the best,
Jim
